Introducing the New CHFP Website: A Platform to Unite Cultural Heritage and Ocean Science
We are thrilled to launch our new website, a platform dedicated to uniting cultural heritage with the UN Ocean Decade efforts to achieve the ‘ocean we want’. As the Cultural Heritage Framework Programme, we are honoured to be the only endorsed Ocean Decade programme focused on integrating cultural heritage into the Ocean Decade.
At the heart of our mission lies a commitment to advocate for the integration and preservation of cultural heritage within marine policy, research, and conservation. Through our website, we are providing a hub for advocacy, technical advice, multidisciplinary research support, capacity building, Ocean Literacy initiatives, and public engagement.
Why Cultural Heritage and the Ocean?
The ocean and coasts hold a repository of cultural heritage spanning millennia. From ancient maritime traditions to indigenous knowledge systems, our oceans are brimming with invaluable cultural treasures and approaches to living harmoniously with the sea. However, these cultural legacies are increasingly threatened by various challenges, including climate change, pollution, and unsustainable human activities.
Recognising the intrinsic connection between cultural heritage and the ocean, our programme endeavours to bridge the gap between heritage and marine conservation. By integrating cultural perspectives into ocean initiatives, we strive for a more holistic and sustainable approach to safeguarding our marine and coastal ecosystems for future generations. Not only can past human interaction with the ocean inform our current situation – but it also helps address future challenges, develop resilience, and motivate sustainable adaptation.
